Practice areas

We offer a wealth of experience and expertise across junior and QC ranks in advising and representing claimants and defendants/applicants and respondents in all tribunals, particularly the High Court and appellate courts, in the following areas of law.

Defamation and other claims involving the publication of false information

In addition to defamation across all media (including all forms of electronic media), members act in other claims in which freedom of expression is engaged, including malicious falsehood, negligent misstatement and passing off.

Privacy laws and breach of confidence

Members of Chambers act for claimants and defendants in privacy actions, based on Article 8 rights, and harassment claims, pursuant to the Protection from Harassment Act 1997. Members of One Brick Court have acted in leading privacy cases, including the ground breaking House of Lords’ decision in Naomi Campbell v MGN Ltd; and regularly act in urgent applications for privacy and harassment injunctions. Members also advise and act in relation to traditional breach of confidence claims in commercial and media contexts.

Media reporting restrictions and contempt

Members of Chambers represent applicants and respondents in relation to restrictions on what the media can report in all tribunals, particularly in criminal proceedings in the Crown Court and children and family proceedings in the Family Division of the High Court. We also advise on issues arising from the protection of journalists’ sources. Members have  represented the Attorney General and media defendants in committals for contempt in the Divisional Court.

Information law

Members advise private clients and public authorities on the rights and obligations under the Data Protection and Freedom of Information legislation, as well as acting in appeals to the First-tier Tribunal and Upper Tribunal (Administrative Appeals Chamber).

Human rights

Human rights issues arise in all the above areas of law and we have significant experience of the modern human rights landscape, both in the private law context and in the context of media related judicial review.

Some members of Chambers in addition have expertise in other media-related areas. See individual members’ CVs for further information.
