In a ground breaking decision the High Court today ruled that Google was not a publisher at common law in respect of defamatory “snippets” generated by a search on Google and displayed in its search results. It was not responsible for the publication of such snippets even after being notified of a complaint by the defamed person. Catrin Evans (instructed by Reynolds Porter Chamberlain) was junior counsel for Google.
