Stephen specialises in all aspects of media law and related human rights law, and has been involved in many substantial cases. He has been nominated by the Attorney General to advise and act for a number of government ministers, departments and officials in a wide variety of media-related matters. He recently appeared in the House of Lords in Ashley v. Chief Constable of Sussex, a claim for battery in which the HL considered unusual and complex questions in relation to the purpose of civil proceedings, abuse of process and the presumption of innocence under Article 6(2) of the ECHR. He is a member of the Professional Conduct Committee of the Bar Standards Board.
